BANKNOTE GRADES

In all our auctions we state a grade. We grade our banknotes using the most commom form of grading found and listed in all major coin and banknote catalogues. Here is a list of the most common grading terms used and this is what you can expect to receive from us when a banknote we list is graded as follows:

Uncirculated (Unc)

This is a perfectly preserved banknote in brand new flat condition. The note is clean and crisp with original natural sheen, colour and body without any discolouration. The corners and edges of this note are sharp and it has no folds or flickmarks.

About Uncirculated (aUnc)

This is almost a perfect banknote. The note is clean and crisp with original natural sheen, colour and body without any discolouration. The corners and edges of this note are sharp. The only fault with this banknote is that it has either a teller counting flick mark or centrefold.

Extremely Fine (EF)

This is still considered to be a high grade banknote. The note has only received marginal handling in circulation and has no significant stains or fading. The note is clean and crisp with original sheen, colour and body without any discolouration. The note may have up to 3 to 4 light folds and sometimes may show evidence of light handling as it may have very slight edge wear or slight corner rounding.

Very Fine (VF)

This is a circulated banknote showing obvious signs of handling and wear but is still attractive. The note is reasonably clean and crisp without being limp. The note has numerous light folds and sometimes even one or two heavy folds. The note may have slight edge wear or corner rounding but is free from excessive heavy soiling or folding.

Fine (F)

This is a well circulated banknote. The note has an overall appearance that is still good despite the colours being clear but not necessarily bright. The note usually shows many folds and creases or wrinkling which may be heavy. In most cases the note shows definite signs of soiling and may have a number of small tears.

Very Good (VG)

This is a well worn banknote with an overall appearance that is still reasonable. The note is still intact and its corners may be well rounded . The note may have large tears and discolouration can be present. The note has heavy folding, some limpness, staining or faded design and can have numerous tears and pin holes.

Good (G)

This is a very worn banknote that is generally limp and unattractive. It has no large pieces missing but it has strong multiple folds or creasing, staining, tears, holes and is dirty or discoloured.

INTERMEDIATE GRADES

It is a common practice with auction houses and coin and banknote dealers to use intermediate grades where neither of the main gradings listed above have been appropriate to use when grading a banknote. We use the following intermediate grades in our auctions as used by other auction houses and banknote dealers to provide more accurate and detailed grades for banknotes listed. This is what you can expect to receive from us when a banknote we list is graded with the following intermediate grade:

Virtually Uncirculated (vUnc)

This banknote is much better than a standard About Uncirculated (aUnc) banknote. It is exactly the same except that usually the teller counting flick mark or centre fold is almost invisible and difficult to detect.

Good Extremely Fine (gEF)

This banknote is much better than a standard Extremely Fine (EF) banknote. It is exactly the same except that usually the folds or faults found in the banknote are almost invisible and difficult to detect and the note presents better than what a standard Extremely Fine (EF) banknote does.

About Extremely Fine (aEF)

This banknote is much better than a standard Good Very Fine (gVF) or Very Fine (VF) banknote but not as good as a standard Extremely Fine (EF) banknote. It is a borderline note and that should be taken into consideration when bidding on a banknote that has this grade. Normally this type of banknote has had minimal circulation and would look exactly like an Extremely Fine (EF) banknote. It will usually have more than the standard 3 or 4 light folds allowed for a true Extremely Fine (EF) banknote and it will usually be free from the signs of handling and wear including any soiling that is normally seen on a Good Very Fine (gVF) or Very Fine banknote (VF) thus making this note a borderline note between a Good Very Fine (gVF) or Very Fine (VF) banknote and an Extremely Fine (EF) banknote and hence the grade About Extremely Fine (aEF) is used.

Good Very Fine (gVF)

This banknote is much better than a standard Very Fine (VF) banknote. It is exactly the same except that usually the folds or faults found in this banknote are softer and the banknote presents better as it has less soiling or wear and handling marks than what is normally seen in a standard Very Fine (VF) banknote.

About Very Fine (aVF)

This banknote is much better than a standard Fine (F) banknote but not as good as a standard Very Fine (VF) banknote. It is a borderline banknote and that should be taken into consideration when bidding on a banknote that has this grade. This banknote usually has more soiling or wear and handling marks than what is normally seen in a standard Very Fine (VF) banknote but not as much as what is present on a standard Fine (F) banknote. This banknote has received less circulation and has a much better overall appearance than a standard Fine (F) banknote but does not look as good as a standard Very Fine (VF) banknote.

When bidding or buying banknotes please realise that the NPA's (Note Printing Australia) primary role is to produce currency quickly for general use and not for the collector with an over critical eye so please keep the following in mind:

The metal security thead can vary in position by up to 5mm on certain banknotes.

Guillotining is often uneven especially with paper notes and in particular the $50 paper notes. This does not change the grade of the banknote as it is naturally miscut and released that way into circulation by the NPA (Note Printing Australia).

PHOTOS USED IN THE AUCTION

The banknotes shown in the photos for any auction are the ones for sale that will be posted out to the final winner.

The photos form part of the description. Please view the photos closely. If you are not sure of anything you see or you need further clarification then please email us first before bidding.

Sometimes the camera lens will cause the banknotes to appear curved when they are in fact flat and straight. All our banknotes are guaranteed to be flat and straight unless otherwise stated in the auction description.

Sometimes the camera lens will cause the banknotes to appear as if the dimensions or the size of the banknote is incorrect when in fact it is correct. All our banknotes are guaranteed to be the correct size and have the correct dimensions unless otherwise stated in the auction description.
