It allows you to see where you have cast the bait, the light also doubles as a fish attractor.       An absolute must for night fishing.   You will catch more fish it is as simple as that.     Benefits of using the glow sticks for night fishing   You will be able to see when you have bites and strike before it is too late.   You can see exactly where you are casting.    You can see where the current has taken your bait so you can retrieve it if it gets too close to snags.   You will be able to tell what is taking your baits (ie. if it is just nibblers or squid or the actual fish you are targeting) once you get more experience in using the glow sticks you too will be able to tell by the movement of the light what fish are biting.      ALL THIS EQUATES TO ONE THING   YOU WILL CATCH MORE FISH     Plus save money on all that gear you lose to snags.       Disadvantages to using glow sticks   The main one of course is the cost of these single use items.
