Are You Passionate About Alternative Energy?
Well I am...
HELLO, My name is Graeme Young... I qualified as an "Electronics Engineer" ( 30 years) ago and although my life has taken other directions over time, I am now fully involved in the "Alternative Energy" business.
Whether you are looking at alternative energy ideas such as wind turbines or Solar panels, or you may just want to run your tools or caravan off your car or 4WD battery... then I can help you.
I love what I do and love to talk about it. In fact here in Perth Western Australia, we are in the process of setting up a model Permaculture farm for sustainable living with all the in's and out's of "Alternative Energy", for everyone to come and see how things work and a place for me to experiment with different energy products as they come available. You can find us on fantasticfarms.com.au
Now this Power Inverter is a little goodie... 600watts continuous power or short peaks of 1200watts which makes it suitable for a range of computors or laptop,TV etc to run off a 12volt battery. "This one we are using ourselves"
Here I could give you a big range of tools and appliances showing the watts power rating, but they may or maynot be accurate. For example some other sites quote 400 watts for a computer and or monitor. Well, as you know, there are two types of monitor, Older (large behind)CRT monitors and the new flat screen or LCD monitor. The difference in wattage in enormous.
But Guess What?? No Guessing Needed... Every electrical appliance in Australia or anywhere else in the western world, has to have the wattage stamped on the tool or appliance for you to read. So if you want to run some tools or anything off your inverter, just read the manufacturers plate. It has all the info you need. Also think about what you want the inverter for. eg. if you want to run some power tools off your car or truck battery, lets say a drill, cut off saw, jigsaw, etc, much more than the rating of the inverter...BUT, you only have one pair of hands, so you can only use one tool at once, and that power tool is likely to much less that 1800 watts.
How does a power inverter work?
A power inverter converts DC power into conventional AC power for running devices when an AC outlet is not available. Simply connect an inverter to a battery source, plug your tools or appliance into the inverter and that's it.
Keep the cables between your inverter and batteries as short as possible. This will help your batteries perform their best and keep the inverter's signal clean. The cables that come with the inverter are very short (500mm) as I think they should be. You can make them longer but you are best to buy a larger diameter cable or use two together. I have supplied two of each in the box.. . If the cables between your battery and inverter get hot while under heavy load, then you should use heavier cables.
It is best to run your inverter right next to the batteries and run an extension cord from your inverter to the job site or to the caravan. That is the correct way to run the system.
The run time on your inverter depends solely on the amount and size (capacity) of your batteries. Here's how you work it out..
Your battery has an amp rating...say 75amps for an example..Divide by 12 making it 6.25...Look at the appliance plate for the amps..say 4.5amps...Divide it into the last number (6.25) and this will be you running time in hours. 1.388 running hours.
Now there are two things you can do to make the running time longer... the first is you can start your car and recharge the battery as you use the inverter or you can use more than one battery at a time. Wire two batteries in parallel.. eg positive to positive, and negative to negative.
