The Ashes is the cricket series that every young Australian cricketer dreams about becoming involved in during his career. I know that for me, to be picked to play for Australia in my First Test was an overwhelming experience but on top of that, for it to be The Ashes test series against the old foe doubled that exhilaration. My involvement in an Ashes-winning series was the ultimate cricketing experience for me, and although a series versus other countries has its excitement as well - particularly against the powerful West Indies - the Ashes is considered by all to be an Australian cricketer's ultimate achievement. That is my personal feeling, but I am sure these feelings are shared by almost any cricketer who plays for Australia against England. The 1970-71 Ashes was my first series. I felt very lucky to be chosen, mainly because I was one of the only opening bowlers left in Shield cricket who hadn't played in an Ashes series. I recall being elated at being given the opportunity to represent my country against the old foe. The Ashes really is a battle on the cricket field and there is no doubt that it has the feeling of going to war against an old enemy. I guess that feeling goes back a long way and is not just confined to cricket. We Australians are, by and large, thought of and referred to by many Englishmen as colonials. In this case, the colonies being those set up centuries ago under the English Empire. I guess a lot of the feeling comes from Australians trying to prove they have come a long way since those early days. I was baptised into Test cricket in a situation where England had a very, very good side and Australia had just lost their last Test series against South Africa 4-0. We were considered the 'easy beats' at that stage. It was very important for us to put up a good show, to try to revive Australia's cricket fortunes. In that series, the Poms did beat us, but there was enough indication of the young players in the team having a bit of what it takes, albeit raw, for Australia to succeed in the future. The most vivid memory I have involves John Snow (the English fast bowler) and company giving our batsmen a fearful sending-off with a liberal sprinkling of short-pitched deliveries. I guess my thoughts were: 'If they can give them, then we should give them back just as well, within the Laws of the game.' And I am sure that our batsmen were pleased to see the English batsmen having to contend with a similar style of attack. That aside, the series was played in good spirit, with players on both sides, although competing very hard out on the field, finding time to have a beer in the dressing room after each day's play. Such is the spirit of The Ashes. I am sure that the Australian team that is embarking on this current Ashes series will have part, if not all, of the feelings which I had towards the Poms. It will be their burning desire to retain The Ashes, in the series that is the pinnacle of Test cricket. The Ashes series is Australia ... v. England. Dennis Lillee".
