PLEASE NOTE: We make every effort to give a complete and accurate description of each item we list. Any imperfection or irregularities in any item will be clearly stated and photographed whenever possible. We try to display the most accurate color possible and do not color enhance any photos.  Pictures are taken using a FinePix E900 Digital Camera.  It is extremely difficult to take pictures of these stones without the glare of the light reflecting in the stone, because of the high polish.  We do not edit out the glare spots, but will gladly retake as many photos as requested to supply a complete mental picture of the colors and fire that exists in each stone.

ABOUT US: When my brother and I owned and operated the mine at Deer Creek, AZ, we kept a selection of the best stones to finish and put on the market when we retired. That time is now, and we are offering these select stones, and once they are gone, there will be no more forthcoming as the Deer Creek Mine is worked out completely, and now closed. Feel free to contact us at any time with questions or special requests. We accept PayPal ONLY. Shipping is by Priority Mail, and all shipments will be going out after 3:00 pm on Fridays only.

What is Fire Agate?

Fire Agate is not a well-known gem. It has colors that are brighter and sometimes more beautiful than opal. With a hardness of 7 there is a far less risk of cracking, fading or easily scratching these stones. This variety of silica is generally formed by volcanic activity. Fire Agate, in my opinion these stones were formed when volcanic steam saturated with colloidal silica, iron oxide and other trace minerals invade cavities, cracks and crevices in regular rock below the earth's surface. As the solutions began to precipitate and grow, layers of silica, iron oxide as well as other trace minerals would be deposited depending on the relative level of those elements in solution and underlying conditions. These alternating silica, iron oxide and other mineral layers (Schiller layers) cause the brilliant fire in the gem. As iron oxide and other trace minerals ran out in the solution colorless chalcedony continued to grow.

Small Note:  After working the mine and grinding agate for over 30 years, I consider myself an authority on this subject.  Every stone is cut, and worked out of the rough to the polished stone by me, Leon Hughes.
