The History Of The

1795 FLOWING HAIR SILVER DOLLAR

The silver dollar was authorized by Congress on April 2, 1792.  Weight and fineness were specific at 416 grains and .8924 fineness.  The first issues appeared in 1794, and until 1804 all silver dollars had the value stamped on the edge: HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT.

The word dollar  evolves from the German thaler, the name given to the first large sized European silver coin.

The 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar was designed by Robert Scot, with only 160,295 copies minted.   

A genuine 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar in similar proof condition would be appraised at over $1,000,000.
