1797 Britannia Cartwheel Penny - Replica
Made to exact dimensions as original coin.
The first coin using steam power, the first British copper penny, the first penny to feature the Britannia design, the first coin officially exported to the Australian colonies and is an Australian proclomation coin.
Struck at the Soho Mint (London) by Matthew Boulton using the first steam powered coin press designed by the inventor of the steam engine, James Watt, Boulton took many years to prove to the Royal Mint of its efficiency. Finally the Royal Mint caved in and commissioned Boulton to strike the 1 ounce Cartwheel Penny in 1797.
18,000 copper Cartwheel penny's where delivered to New South Wales and this led Governor Philip King to enact the Proclamation of 1800 in an attempt to regulate the values of the mix of currency in use in the colonies.
