This finely engraved
beautifully hand coloured original antique engraving of Hudson
City New York State and the Catskill Mountains was
engraved by William H Bartlett
and
was published
in the 1840 edition of of Canadian
Scenery by George Virtue.
Britains William H.
Bartlett (1809 - 1854) was a
topographical illustrator who was articled to John
Britton. He travelled extensively, visiting Syria,
Egypt, Palestine and America.
Britains William H.
Bartlett,
a prolific
illustrator,
travelled the world
documenting his travels with beautiful drawings. These
were later given to expert artisans, who etched them
into plates of steel for printing. In the 1800s, these
were incredibly popular as a way for people to see
sights that they would never experience, in far distant
lands. Among the most popular were his engravings of
"American Scenery." Not only did people around the world
marvel at the beauty of these views of our relatively
young country, Americans also found these pictures
irresistible.
William
Henry Bartlett made four visits to the United States
between 1836 and 1852. Based on the earlier of these
visits, he created a series of views that were published
around 1840. They were titled "American Scenery," with a
text by Nathaniel P. Willis. "American Scenery" contains
a number of views of the mountains, lakes, and
waterfalls of the White Mountains. Bartlett made sepia
wash drawings the exact size to be used in engravings.
His engraved views were widely copied by artists, but no
signed oil painting by his hand is known. Bartlett died
on board a French ship returning from a voyage to the
Orient. Engravings based on Bartlett's views were later
used in his posthumous History of the United States of
North America, continued by B. B. Woodward and published
c. 1856.
