Ancient World at the time of Ptolemy
This Full-Colour steel-plate engraved map of Known Ancient World by Ptomely, is from the
Geographie Universelle de Malte-Brun Atlas Dresse et Divise Par
Nationalities, by A.H. Dufour, published 1856, by Georges Barba,
Paris.
Dufour drew the maps based on the (written) geography of
Malte-Brun, so they look similar to the work of Malte-Brun, but
Dufour has drawn his maps on a much larger scale, thus including more
details. The map measures 36cm by 29cm (14in by 11in), is folded in
middle, Blank on the Reserve, and printed on thick study paper.
This map
shows the Known Ancient World, as drawn by Ptolemy in
c150E. The map shows the ancient world
as it was “believed to be“, not actually how it was, and is a copy of a map that
Ptolemy drew 2000 years ago. It shows Europe, the top half of Africa and
a third of Asia. Malte-Brun was one of the most highly
regarded 19th Century geographers', and the level of detail/clarity shown in his
maps is amongst the best you will ever find from the
1800's.
The world in ancient times was only believed to
exist as far as the central Africa to the south, Indo-China in the east, the
Canary Islands in the west and Scandinavia/Central Asia in the north. The map
shows the limits of what people bleived existed, “no-one” had gone any further
than the limits shown on the map and thus people belived that to be the edge of
the world. The map is divided up into the three continents by colour,
with internal divisions/states/regions named within each. All the major
geography (rivers, mountians, etc) that was known at the time is shown, as well
as towns & cities. Also included on the map are the Distance Scales for 14
different distances (most of which look like ancient measurements); and a Rose
de huit Vents and a Rose de douze Vents - which are very nice looking & interesting.

CONDITION: Very Good - thin 8cm strip of mild silver-fish damage on the back of bottom of map, can just see from front - ONLY in Margin
Condition Rating System: Near Perfect/Very Good/Good/Fair/Poor. Signs of Use = slight marks/dirtiness from people holding map (Very Minor/Minor/Mild/Fair/Heavy).

Sent by Airmail (5-14 days) in carboard tube package. Can be sent by Registered Mail (about 3 times the cost) or Sea Mail (cheaper, but 6-8 weeks) if you wish - let me know. Up to 5 maps can be sent for same cost, will work out after sale.

IF you wish to pay by Bank Transfer into my account in Australian dollars, ask first and usually I say yes. But I
normally round up to the closest whole dollar (ie $36.65 = $37) and
use the exchange rate on the day of sale not date of payment.
