Fantastic old LETTERS BOOK. The original was sent to the intended and a carbon(?) copy is kept. Writing is brown and does not look like it is written in ink. Book measures approx 27cm x 22cm.
Apparently, the author CHARLES LANE emigrated from England in the early 1890s. After establishing himself in Melbourne, he began writing "Home", referring quite often to Melbourne as "The Colony".
The letters make a great read in that they describe places in Melbourne of the Late Victorian era, places visited with friends, and where his friends lived such as Toorak.
The page shown above, for example, is dated 21st May, 1893. It was written at 'BELLA VISTA', Melbourne and was written on Whitsunday.
Quite a prolific writer, there are somewhere around 190 pages writteh on. Dates from a recieved letter (inserted) in 1891 to one written in 1901(appears to be latest date). There may be dates outside this, I have not read each letter and not all are dated.
Book is in extremely fragile condition. The covers and binding are pretty good but the pages are like wafers. It is quite easily read, once the handwriting is deciphered. A sheet of plain paper under the page helps.
This book is an important historical record.
