This is a photographic glass magic lantern slide, black and white, labeled, "Helping Mamma Iron the Cklothes--A Filipino Method, Island of Luzon, P. I." If you collect clothes irons, here is a really unusual example for your collection! The term Igorot refers to a group of related village-based societies in the mountainous country of central and northern Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago. While most of the peoples of the Philippines are either Christian or Muslim, the Igorot practice a native religion often called “animism,” an anthropological term referring to the belief that spirits permeate the material world. Despite their rich history and sophisticated material culture, the Igorot have long been viewed as a “primitive” people, first by the Spanish and subsequently by the Americans. Exhibitions of Igorot peoples at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition, the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, and the 1909 Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition served largely to reinforce popular notions of Filipino inferiority. The displays stressed the “primitivism” of Igorot culture, particularly dog-eating, a common practice in many cultures, and head-hunting. This slide is from an early set of 600 slides produced by Keystone View Company around 1900 although many views were taken well before that time. This is slide #247 of the series. These views also exist as stereo views. (Not included with the slide.) Slides were meant primarily to be used in schools but are now valued because of their historic photographic views. Lantern slides are one of the best untapped resources of photographs there are. Although once plentiful, few of these slides exist today because over the years they have been destroyed and discarded. Slide is 3 1/4" x 4", is in very good condition, and can be viewed by projecting, holding it to the light, or placing it on a light box. This slide can be made into a print or poster. If you would like information on having that done AFTER you purchase the view, please let me know. For more information on magic lanterns and slides go to www.magiclanternsociety.org. ![]() ![]() I offer a reduced postage amount for multiple items IF you email for the cost.
