1909 Australian Pattern Penny - Replica
Made to exact dimensions as original die.
Although achieving nationhood at Federation in January 1901, Australia took almost another ten years to create and release its first national coinage. The Australian Commonwealth Government was too concerned with more pending issues to deal with creating a unique Australian currency until 1908 when the treasurer announced plans to deal with this issue as part of re-inforcing national pride. Cheap silver minted into coin would also be a great revinue raiser so the debate began on the design. It seemed in 1909 the debate had concluded with the nations coinage to include the map of Australia on the reverse and distinguished potrait of King Edward the VII on the obverse.
By August 1909, the punches for the Florin, Shilling and Sixpence were ready but just some months before minting, the Governor-General requested that the map be omitted and the Coat of Arms be included.
Lost to history, no examples of the 1909 Pattern Florin were struck by the Royal Mint. Only two genuine example specimens where made and are electrotype strikings.
