1911  Edward VII  Tea Spoon

done in the Art Nouveau style

Description:  A really beautiful collector's Art Nouveau sugar spoon/teaspoon from the early twentieth century Edwardian era ~ crafted in the sensual Nouveau style with elegant scrolled and floral tip.  It is a beautifully designed silver teaspoon in very fine condition.  In length it is 12 cm. long = 4.75" long and the bowl is 2.3cm in width.  It weighs 13 grams of hallmarked, British sterling silver.

Hallmarks: "Crown" for Sheffield city mark, "Lion Passant" ['The Sterling Lion'] for British silver content, "Gothic t" for 1911 Sheffield date mark, "J.R" in rectangular stamp for Joseph Rogers-Sheffield Silvermaker. Plus the addition of Joseph Roger's trademark silver stamp: "star + Maltese Cross" inside a shield.

History of Joseph Rogers Company:  "Starting life in 1724 (although other sources suggest 1682), Joseph Rodgers & Sons are one of the longest established cutlery companies in Sheffield. They were granted the Royal warrant in 1821 by George IV, this accolade continuing through the reign of Queen Victoria and they proudly display their "by appointment" on knife blades. They produced a large amount of silver and plated flatware, but are particularly well known for the fine quality of their knives and carving sets."-online information.

Era: This was made just at the crux of the Edwardian Era-encapsulating the end of the Art Nouveau style that had been popular and was the pre-cursor for the incoming Art Deco style.  It was an optimistic time, even though there were gathering clouds of war; the Art Nouveau curve-linear lines of organic grace were still very much loved.  This spoon is no exception with its swirled, foliated scrolls. (See picture #3)  The terminus is also monogrammed with a gothic "B" for the family that once owned this beauty! 

Condition: Very Fine, some patina on reverse of the tip, and a micro-scratch on the back of the bowl.
