Re-listed. This bike must sell! Revised buy it now and low reserve. One for the serious collector or two stroke enthusiast! Here we have an extremely rare 1949 600cc Scott Flying Squirrel. The bike is in good condition for it's 60 years and has recently been the subject of a lengthy engine overhaul. Scott motorcycles were the brain child of brilliant English engineer Alfred Angus Scott. He wanted to produce a high quality, fast, efficient and usable machine employing his endless technical innovations. Dozens of patients were given to Scott and the bikes were seen as being far more advanced and superior to anything else in the early 1900's. Scott was a firm believer in solid engineering at any cost rather than building bikes to a set budget. He used very little proprietary parts and much preferred to design all aspects of a bike himself, even down to the carby. The firm enjoyed huge success on the race track and was successful on more than one occasion at the Isle of Mann TT races. Only bad luck prevented many more wins. The Scott engine was so advanced and the bikes so fast that they had to be handicapped to make events competitive. The engine capacity was multiplied by 1.32 to give a new competition cc rating. They really were that much better than anyone else! Alfred Scott left the company to concentrate on a new venture of his and tragically died in the mid 1920's still a reasonably young man. The Scott firm went on to hand build a total of around 16,000 bikes over some 60 years of production. To put that figure in perspective, Norton built about 55,000 Commando's alone. The Scott club tells me that an estimated 100 bikes only are in Australia, so they truly are a very rare bike. This 1949 machine is one of the first Scott's to employ coil ignition and the Dowty forks. The bike's history as I understand it is as follows. This particular Scott motorcycle was sold new in England in 1949 at a cost greater than the legendary Norton International. After some years of use it found its way to famous UK bike traders Verralls. The bike was purchased in 1971 by a gent in Melbourne, however the bikes engine was found to be defective so Verralls shipped another engine to Melbourne. The machine was apparently used very little over the next three decades and was then sold to another gent in Northern NSW and was one bike in an impressive collection. Over the years the owner lost interest or probably more accurate, lost the ability to ride with confidence so the collection was slowly sold off until only the Scott remained. I was told by a friend that this Scott existed about two years ago and I bought the bike soon after. A lot of work has been done over the last two years to make the bike as reliable as possible. The ORIGINAL engine was completely overhauled including new pistons, rings, big end and main rollers, gaskets, crank seals lapped and polished etc. Also new brake shoes, Dunlop TT100 tyres, chain, carby slide and re-cored, re-chromed radiator at massive expense. The bike has had a 12 volt conversion with alternator and has a new sealed high quality battery fitted. The pilgrim oil pump has been fitted with a reduction gear to make it much more controllable. The Dowty oleomatic forks which were basically useless from new have been converted to a conventional internal spring. The gearbox which is Scott's own design is in very good condition but has been fitted with a hardened, lengthened kick start pawl to give a greater range of swing. The overall condition of the bike is very good. It is relatively unmolested and original and is a running machine. The twin front brakes and big rear brake give excellent stopping power for the vintage and the handling is amazing. The tin ware is all there and straight and all numbers are correct. A true bike, not a made up machine from parts. The only mechanical error as far as I can see is an air leak probably from one of the crankcase doors.I don't think it's a crank seal as the engine was overhauled by a top, thorough and very experienced engineer. For those who want cosmetic perfection you won't find it here. This bike is not cosmetically perfect but has an honest patina relevant to the age. Please view the attached photo's. I am only selling the Scott to fund two other restoration projects. This is a unique opportunity to buy a key and unique piece of motorcycle heritage. A 600cc, water cooled, parallel twin, two stroke! What an amazing machine. Please feel free to call Chris on 0409 551 905 with questions. I work long hours so please leave a message if I am unable to take your call and I will get back to you. Very reasonable reserve. Can deliver bike to North Eastern NSW or South East Queensland at no charge. Will crate bike for areas Nation wide or pick up welcome. Freight is the responsibility of the buyer. I will help if possible. COD or bank deposit only please. |
