We recommend the use of BTUs or kW of refrigeration rather than horsepower ratings in the selection process or comparison of air conditioning units.
The reason for this is due to the very loose connection between this horsepower rating and the actual cooling and heating performance of an air conditioner. The horsepower rating is the power rating of the motor connected to the compressor. The final cooling capacity of an air conditioner is then dependant on the efficiency
