2003 - $1.00 Uncirculated Coin - 50th Anniversary of the End of the Korean War

Australian forces went to the Korean peninsula after communist North Korea invaded its southern neighbour in June 1950, and served there until 1957 even though an armistice ended the fighting on 27 July 1953. This was the frst occasion tht members of the United Nations acted together against an aggressor nation. Following the American landing at Inchon in September 1950, UN forces cleared South Korea, then advanced north towards the Chinese border. After China entered the war on the side of North Korea, UN troops were forced to retreat south of the 38th parallel in appalling winter conditions. The Australians were unprepared for such severe cold, as those who endured this terrible conflict well remember. The war then became bogged down along defensive lines which eventually became the cease fire boundary when the armistice was signed. The coin design background of vertical lines replicates the stainless steel poles which are a major feature of the design of the Australian National Korean War Memorial in Canberra. The "Dove of Peace" is shown between the floral emblems of South Korea and Australia. In memory of those who died in the Korean War  1950 - 1953 and in honour of those who served.
