On 11 April 1506, Pope Julius II laid the foundation stone for a new church to be built in the Vatican City on the site where St. Peter was said to have been buried in 67 A.D. The church took 120 years to complete and at various times was under the architectural direction of the artists Raphael and Michelangelo. St. Peter’s Basilica is now one of the world’s most magnificent buildings. This coin celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the laying of the Foundation Stone. It features the Basilica as well as Pope Julius II, Michelangelo, and Pope Benedict XVI – St. Peter and the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. In addition to Proof Sterling Silver and Uncirulated Cupro Nickel editions, the coin is also available in a stunning 1 kilo of Fine Silver.
