This is the guitar made famous by Scotty Moore and Elvis Presley. Scotty received his first Super 400, from Gibson in January 1957 which replaced his L5 as his principal guitar. He used Super 400s through the remainder of his career recording and performing with Elvis until 1968. In the 80's and 90's when Scotty returned to recording and performing he would again use a Super 400.
The first Super 400’s rolled off the Gibson line in 1934 as an acoustic instrument. It was the largest and most expensive archtop guitar ever produced by any manufacturer or company. It cost four hundred dollars, hence the name. In 1951 Gibson introduced the electric version of the Super 400 and named it the Super 400 CES. It was the first Gibson electric guitar to feature the classic 2 pickup circuitry ( 2 volumes , 2 tones , and a 3 way switch for pickup combination ).
This Gibson Custom Shop Super 400 CES comes from the Nashville Custom Shop and is a faithful reproduction of the Super 400 CES (Cutaway Electric Spanish) from the late '50s. It features a single "Venetian" cutaway 18" grand auditorium style body, arched spruce top, bound f-holes, figured maple back/sides, bound ebony fingerboard, pearl split block fingerboard inlay, adjustable rosewood bridge, gold trapeze tailpiece, multi-bound blackface peghead with pearl split diamond/logo inlay, 3 per side tuners, gold hardware and Gibson Classic '57 pickups!
