On offer are 30 Purple-flowering Raspberry (Rubus odoratus) seeds.

Synonyms: American Bramble, Flowering Raspberry, Purple Flowering Raspberry, Purple-flowering Raspberry, Purpleflowering Raspberry,
Flowering Raspberry, Virginia raspberry, Roodbloeiende Framboos.
Family: Rosaceae

Range: Eastern North America, from Nova Scotia west to Ontario, and south to Georgia and Alabama.
Botanical Epithets: odoratus means scented.

Purple-flowering Raspberry is a deciduous shrub growing to 3 m tall, with (unlike many other species in the genus) perennial, not biennial stems.
Also, unlike most other related species this plant does not have thorns.
The leaves are palmately lobed with five (rarely three or seven) lobes, up to 25 cm long and broad, superficially resembling maple leaves.
The flowers are 3–5 cm diameter, with five purple petals; they are produced from early spring to early fall. The scented flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees.
The fruit matures in late summer to early autumn, and resembles a large, flat raspberry with many drupelets, and is rather fuzzy to the touch and tongue.
The fruit is edible raw or cooked, it is sweet-tart and dryer than an ordinary raspberry. They are usually cooked and used in pies, jellies, preserves etc, the fruit can also be dried for later use.

Historic Medicinal Uses:
The leaves are highly astringent. They are used in the treatment of dysentery and diarrhoea. The leaves have been used as a wash for old and foul sores, boils etc.
A decoction or infusion of the branches has been used to settle the stomach.
A decoction of the leaves and stems has been used to treat kidney complaints.
The root is astringent. A decoction of the root or the root bark has been used as a treatment for diarrhoea and colds. The root has been used in the treatment of toothaches.
The berries have been used as a diuretic.

Other Uses:
A purple to dull blue dye is obtained from the fruit.
Plants are vigorous and can be grown as a tall ground cover for large areas.

Cultivation details
This plant likes partial shade, rich, slightly acid soil and moderate water. Easily grown in sun or semi-shade. Grows well in a sandy soil but does not like clay. Prefers a semi-shaded position. Does well in a woodland garden though it is less likely to fruit well in such a position.
A very ornamental plant, grown as an ornamental plant for its conspicuous flowers with a long flowering period, it is hardy to about -30°c. It is hardy to zone 3 and is not frost tender.
The glandular hairs on the stems have a powerful resinous scent somewhat like cedarwood.
A vigorous suckering shrub, it has perennial stems without prickles.

Propagation:
Soak seed in hot tap water and let stand in the water for 24 hours. Cold stratify for 3 months at 3°c.sow 3mm deep in potting mix, keep moist. Can take up to 18 months to germinate.
Prick out the seedlings when they are large enough to handle and grow on in a cold frame.
Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring of the following year.
