On offer are 35 White Soul Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca "White Soul") seeds.

A native of Europe, including Britain, and temperate Asia.

Perennial growing to 0.25cm by 0.25cm.
It is hardy to zone 5 and is not frost tender.
It is in flower and fruit from early spring to frost.
The flowers are hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, flies and Lepidoptera (Moths & Butterflies).

White Soul has white fruit.
The fruit is eaten fresh, cooked or made into jams, preserves, pies, cakes, puddings etc.
It's Sweet and Succulent with an exquisite flavour and aroma, completely unlike the taste-less supermarket varieties.

Rich in iron, vitamin C, and potassium, the fruit is an excellent addition to the diet of people suffering from anaemia and can be up to 15mm in diameter.

Young leaves are used raw or cooked. Added to salads or used as a potherb.

In Teutonic legend, the strawberry is sacred to the goddess Frigga, principal wife of Odin.
Strawberries were cultivated by the Romans as early as 200 BC.

In medieval times, strawberries were regarded as an aphrodisiac and a soup made of strawberries, borage and soured cream was traditionally served to newly-weds at their wedding breakfast. In the sixteenth century, strawberries were sold in cone-shaped straw baskets, making them one of the earliest packaged foods!

Dr William Butler (1535 -1618) originated the famous quotation 'Doubtless, God could have made a better berry, but doubtless, God never did.'

Medicinal Uses
The leaves and the fruit are mildly astringent, diuretic, laxative and tonic.

A tea made from the leaves is a blood tonic and has been used as a treatment for diarrhoea in adults and children. It is used in the treatment of chilblains and also as an external wash on sunburn. A poultice can be made from the powdered leaves mixed in oil, it is used to treat open sores. The fresh or dried leaves are used as a tea substitute. A delicious drink, it is ideal for children.

The roots are astringent and diuretic. A decoction is used internally in the treatment of diarrhoea and chronic dysentery. Externally it is used to treat chilblains and as a throat gargle. The root has been used as a coffee substitute in India.

The leaves are mainly used, though the fruits are an excellent food to take when feverish and are also effective in treating rheumatic gout. A slice/poultice of strawberries is also excellent when applied externally to sunburnt skin. The fruits contain salicylic acid and are beneficial in the treatment of liver and kidney complaints, as well as in the treatment of rheumatism and gout. The fruit is used as a tooth cleaner. The fresh fruit removes stains from teeth if it is allowed to remain for about 5 minutes.
The fruit is also used cosmetically in skin-care creams. It tones and whitens the skin, combats wrinkles, lightens freckles and soothes sunburn.

Cultivation:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained, moisture retentive soil in a sunny to light shade position. Tolerates semi-shade though fruit production will be reduced. Succeeds on acid and alkaline soils. Likes a mulch of pine or spruce leaves. Does well on woodland edges.

Propagation:
Sow in neutral potting mix, in flats/punnets, seed germinates best at 18-21C.
Seeds can take 4 weeks or more to germinate but often begins in 2 weeks.
The seedlings are very small and slow-growing at first, but then grow rapidly.
Keep moist and plant out in full sun to part shade when large enough. Space plants 30cm/1ft apart.
