4 AMERICAN COIN SILVER SPOONS c1790s MATTHIAS LAMAR

Presented is a nice lot of 18th century American coin silver spoons. Each spoon is engraved with the old original monogram at the end of the handle as shown in the photographs. Each of these spoons was made by a different maker.

Each spoon is stamped on the reverse with a maker’s mark. The maker’s marks on the first two spoons shown are too worn to discern. The third spoon has a maker’s mark of ML for Matthias Lamar of Philadelphia. The last name of this silversmith also appears as Lamer, Lemaire, and Lemar. Lamar was active around the 1780s and 1790s. The fourth spoon has a maker’s mark of WB or WP. The second letter of the maker’s mark is largely worn. It may be the mark of William Ball, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland who was active around the 1780s and the 1790s.

The spoons are in good condition overall. There are some dents and dings here and there, but there are no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.

The spoons are between 5 and 6 inches long.

The weight is 49.7 grams or 1.7 ounces.
