~ Vibrant colours Traditional Amate panels hand painted ~ MEXICO – 1960’s Description: 4 wonderful panels, in vibrant colours depicting birds and animals. Amate is the original paper used by the Ancient Aztec and Mayan civilisations for writing. including the fig, which is crushed and pounded into flat sheets and then dried. These elegant papers were also used as a canvas for paintings. The Art of painting in Amate is handed down from generation to generation since ancient times. The Quetzal birds posing over cactus are famous for their spectacular feathers, and panels often feature local countryside and small animals. These hand painted panels were purchased on one of many trips to Mexico while my parents when living in the USA in the late 1960’s. Condition: Excellent- one panel has a small flake of paint missing from the body of white bird (photo) but will be easy to repair with art acrylic. Measurements: approximate as each panel is handmade length- 33.5cms width-24cms.
