We recommend the use of BTUs or kW of refrigeration rather than horsepower ratings in the selection process or comparison of air conditioning units.

The reason for this is due to the very loose connection between this horsepower rating and the actual cooling and heating performance of an air conditioner. The horsepower rating is the power rating of the motor connected to the compressor. The final cooling capacity of an air conditioner is then dependant on the efficiency and type of compressor, air flow rate, quality of air coils/surface area and air entering conditions. This final overall performance is then measured in kilowatts of refrigeration or, in imperial units, British Thermal Units (BTU) per hour.

It is for this reason that when selecting or comparing air conditioning units we only ever use this final figure, as supplied by the manufacturer, as it is a measure of the actual cooling capacity not a measure of the amount of electricity it will use.
