A Garden of Birds
Australian Birds in Australian Gardens
Graham Pizzey
Published 1988, first edition, Viking O'Neil, Penguin Australia
In A Garden of Birds, Graham Pizzey, the distinguished ornithologist and author, writes of the delights of the different plant communities of Australia and their indigenous fauna; the Victorian Grampians; the Queensland rainforest; the Sydney sandstone vegetation; the ironbarks of the goldfield areas; the sandplains of south-western Australia. He empathises with the gardener's desire to bring something of these environments into their own gardens, but stresses that making a suburban garden into a good bird-garden cannot be done to a formula, as it requires balance and subtle orchestration if it is not to be a hotch-potch of plants and styles.
He discusses the English gardening tradition of collecting plants from around the world; and the damage done to the Australian landscape and wildlife by too-enthusiastic importaion of birds and plants.
The author writes of his experiences building his own garden at Mt Martha on the Mornington Peninsula, and the experience of other bird-gardeners from Brisbane to Adelaide.
The book is enhanced by the author's delightful photographs and the exquisite drawings of Richard Weatherly.
