It is highly unusual for the ordination of a deacon to make front page news, but that is what happened to Barry Stopfel in 1990. His ordination to be a deacon in the Episcopal Church touched off such a debate that the whole nation took nte. It shook the Episcopal Church to its foundations and led to only the second heresy trial in over two centuries of the denomination's existence. A council of bishops accused the Right Reverend Walter C Righter of heresy for ordaining an openly gay man to be a deacon. But in May 1996, Church leaders absolved the Bishop Righter of heresy.

Previously we had read only what journalists and reporters wrote about them in the New York Times, or Time, or Christianity Today. In Courage to Love we read what Barry Stopfel and his partner, Will Leckie, have to say about their experience as gay Christian men who have borne the brunt of society's homophobia, harassment and hatred.
