The first part in an unplanned War trilogy - with KANAL (1957) and ASHES AND DIAMONDS (1958) - that began a renaissance in Polish cinema.
A strikingly unsentimental appraisal of heroism in tale of a cocky Polish youth who decides to fight the Nazis after falling for pretty Resistance leader.
During the Nazi occupation of Poland, a generation of youth comes of age. Stach is one of them. He & his friends start with spontaneous acts of defiance, which can prove deadly, but have no organized purpose. Then he is introduced to the underground resistance guided by an avuncular Communist organizer. When he sees the valiant & beautiful Dorota, a leader of the Youth, he volunteers and falls love with Dorota. Soon Stach is engaged in dangerous efforts to fight oppression and indignity, maturing as he assumes responsibility for others' lives. Unfortunately Dorota is arrested, Stach's heart is stricken. In the meanwhile the Under-ground recruits many new members. A new generation is growing up.

This tape is formatted for playback on PAL-enabled systems (Australian Standard).
PAL: Phase Alternating Line. The colour TV broadcast system used in Australia, UK & Europe. A PAL picture delivers a better quality picture than NTSC due to its 625 horizontal lines (sharper picture and better colours).
Please note: VCRs sold in NTSC countries (United States, Canada and Japan) are not all compatible with the PAL system, and these types will prevent playback.
Your TV set will also need to be PAL compatible in order to view these tapes in colour. Please refer to your user manual or manufacturer to determine compatibility.
