A HISTORY OF BALLET AND DANCE IN THE WESTERN WORLD

By Alexander Bland

Dance is universal and as old as society. Until very recently, its continuous history could be traced only through the works of artists who depicted it. Nowadays, photography, motion picture film, and new forms of dance notaton provide a more reliable and comprehensive record.

Nevertheless, the artists of the past serve us well. Alexander Bland has searched out a diverse collection of illustrations from many sources to illuminate this concise history o ballet and dance in the West, which he covers in its entirety, from its ritual beginnings on the banks of the Nile to complex rhythms of modern dance. He shows how, over those five thousand years of development, similarities have remained, for dance is a persistent art.

The story told here of how ballet and dance developed through the ages sheds light on the changing values and fashions of society. The close relationships of ance and music, theatre, and design are also examined. Besides providing portraits of several of the superstars from Vestris and Taglioni to Fontey and Nureyev, Alexander Bland discusses the little publicised theorticians of the art. And his chronology of key events in the long histor of dance contributes an overall perspective.
