Following the tsunami of 26 December 2004 that devastated many of the coastal areas of Northern Sumatra as well as other nations around the Indian Ocean rim, the Australian Defence Force joined the international community in providing humanatarian assistance to communities in Banda Aceh, Sumatra and Indonesia. I was deployed as Commander of the Maritime Component of Combined Task Force 629 for Operation Sumatra Assist. I was in theatre in Medan, Banda Aceh and on board HMAS Kanimbla until 7 February 2005, when I handed over duties to Commander Goerge McGuire, RAN, the new Commanding Officer of Kanimbla.
After I had left the theatre , a further earthquake occurred, and Kanimbla returned to the island of Nias to provide more assistance. In the course of that part of the operation, on 2 April 2005, Royal Australian Navy Sea King helicopter Shark 02 crashed and nine of our people tragically lost their lives. This book is dedicated to their memory and helps us all to remember what a worthy task they were engaged in. I commend the photographers and writers for their efforts in putting together such a fitting tribute. - Peter Leschen, Commodore, RAN
