The Schnellboot or fast craft was a type of German torpedo boat during World War II, known to the Allies as E Boats ("E" for Enemy). Approximately twice as large as their British counterparts, the E boats were better suited for the open sea & had a substantially longer range at approximately 700 nautical miles. E boats were often used to patrol the Baltic & the English Channel in order to intercept shipping heading for English ports in the south & east. As such they would be up against Royal Navy Motor Gun Boats (MGBs) & Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs). They were also transferred to the Mediterranean & the Black Sea by river & land transport.
Post War Service in the Royal Navy: At the end of the war about 34 E boats were surrendered to the British. 3 boats, S-130 (renamed P5230), S-208 (P5208) & S-212 (P5212) were retained for trials. P5230 & P5208 were subsequently used for clandestine Russian intelligence gathering missions in the Baltic sea under the cover of "British Baltic Fishery Protection Service" until 1957. This unit was commanded by (Sir) John Harvey-Jones (subsequently chairman of ICI).
