In this book Captain William Jones tells the story of a voyage under sail - a voyage which took him twice round the Horn before it ended in disaster.
The author gives an astonishingly graphic account of life on a great sailing ship. His narrative has a freshness and detail which can come only from a first-hand experience which today is almost unique. He joined the barque Caithness-Shire in 1909 as a young Second Mate. She sailed from Port Talbot at a time when sailing ships were losing the battle against steam, when their outward beauty contrasted sharply with the appalling conditions endured by their crews.
Always there was the relentless enemy: the sea. Jones understands the true value of courage and skill in the face of great odds and he makes each episode come alive and he relives the horror and fury of Cape Horn. The end of the Caithness-Shire comes without warning, but when she eventually gives in to her old enemy it is with the dignity which makes her a lasting part of history.
This 255 page hardcover is illustrated with black and white photographs. The dustjacket has some heavy creases, splits and wear and there are some light marks to back. Internally there is browning/mottling to page edges due to age, but it is otherwise in a good, tight, clean condition. A wonderful read at a great price!
