When the Second World War broke out, Marchesa Iris Origo and her husband had been running the estate of La Foce in Tuscanny since 1924. This is her journal of those turbulent war years, simply and beautifully told.

Origo, an Anglo-American married to an Italian landowner, had divided loyalties when the war commenced. But as the war dragged on, soldier from both sides wandered the countryside and were helped by the villagers, who were concerned less with who was fighting whom than with caring for those who needed help.

Orphans were evacutaed to Val d'Orica from the cities, then came refugees and prisoners of war - and, in the hills above the valley, partisans. The German occupying force was never far way, nor was the risk of betrayal. Anyone caught helping the enemy could be shot. War in Val d'Orica is an unsentimental story of civilian life in wartime.
