It's a rare thing when a spin-off surpasses the original show in terms
of both quality and overall maturity but that's what happened with the
critically acclaimed Buffy The Vampire Slayer spin-off Angel.
Angel, the original vampire with a soul, played the role of Buffy's soul
mate for three seasons on Buffy, but after much heartbreak Angel left for a
worse hive of demonic scum and despotic villainy: Los Angeles.
There, along with fellow Buffy veteran Cordelia Chase and the demonic Doyle,
he set up a detective agent to investigate mysterious supernatural and
demonic happenings. The Later additions of Amy Acker, J. August Richards,
Alexis Denisof and Andy Hallet added greatly to the group dynamic of the
show.
The shows Premise and overall focus changed over the course of five seasons
but I won't ruin those changes for you on I will only to say that these
various changes strengthen the show, especially and unexpectedly the
unlikely, but fascinating status quo of season Five, which I found to be the
best season overall.
Expect numerous entertaining guest appearances by Buffy cast members such as
Willow, Buffy, Darla, Spike (who joined the cast in the fifth and final
season), Druscilla, Andrew and Faith in particular, who became a semi
regular to the show during her time as a wayward slayer.
For Five seasons Angel was among the best shows on TV, cut down in it's
prime, it was a show gone before it's time. This DVD collection represents
great value when compared to the over priced individual season box sets and
I look forward to having the entire series to watch again and again on DVD.
