Secretaire Bookcase possibly 1900's. I purchased this piece 40 years ago from an antique dealer in Camberwell, but unfortunately do not know its history before that time. I assume that the wood is oak, judging by the carved oak tree on the front drop down panel. It is a lovely piece of furniture in good condition for its age. There are a couple of flaws, which I've tried to show in the photos. They are :a crack in the timber on the top shelf, a small hole drilled in the back for a speaker cord, and a stain on the bottom of the leadlight door (possible paint?) which I think were all present when I purchased the cabinet.
The dimensions are
- Overall height : 1875
- Height to top of LH shelf section : 1235
- Width : 1170
- Depth : 440
The cabinet is in original condition, with adjustable shelves in the leadlight display area, blue felt material on the drop down writing bureau section, all handles in good conditon, drawers run smoothly, however I have never had a key to the cupboards, which open and close on a latch.
The cabinet is a wonderful warm timber with attractive grains, making it a lovely display or functional piece of furniture..
