  •  Tarot cards are any set of cards used in fortune telling.
  • Many claims have been made as to where the Tarot originated, e.g. China, India, Egypt, but their true origin remains obscure.
  •  Tarot cards as we know them first appeared in Italy and France in the late 14th century.
  • Early Tarot decks were of several types, each varying in the number of cards.
  • The standard modern Tarot is based on the Venetian or Piedmontese tarot.
  • It consists of two groups: the Major Arcana consisting of 22 cards, and the Minor Arcana consisting of 56 cards
  • The tarot was probably used for playing card games originally, though Travellers have long used them for fortune telling.
  • It is thought they started to take on esoteric associations in the 18th century, they have retained that association and today are widely used for fortune telling.
