TURKEY TOLSON TJUPURRULA

Spear Dreaming/Tingari 2000

127 x 90 cm

This painting is associated with the area of "IIYINGAUNGAU" in the Western Australian desert.  It  depicts a pre-battle ceremony with numerous spears being straightened, represented by the line work. This piece depicts the repetition involved in the crafting of Spears. This is a long and arduous process and requires great skill and strength. A tree known as "Spearbush" (Pandorea Doratoxylon) is used to make the shaft of these spears, as the wood is lightweight,  very strong and can be readily straightened and hardened over a fire.

In the Dreamtime a large group of Mitukatjirri men travelled from a claypan at Tjukula to Ilyingaungau, where they made camp.  At the same time further north a group of men from Tjikarri entered the area. They made a camp near an overhanging cliff and prepared a large campfire to keep them warm in the night. The Mitukatjirri men saw the campfire in the distance and immediately started preparing their spears to challenge the Tjikarri men to a fight. The Tjikarri men willingly accepted the challenge. The pre-battle ceremony continued till the early hours of the morning. After the fight the Mitukatjirri Men travelled to a near by cave in the mountains to rest.

The work is 127 x 90cm and is stretched.

It will be sent FREE of charge unstretched and rolled in a tube or the painting can be picked up from
