Traditional Old Stool, Kamba People, Kenya This beautiful old, traditional and worn 4 legged stool shows many signs of use. It has a beautiful naturally polished patina, the legs are eroded and it has an old crack on the seat which does not effect the integrity or strength of the piece. The area that it comes from is is very arid and wood is valued. Items such as this are used until they have no further use to the person they were carved for. In our culture these pieces have little functional use but are beautiful and have the wonderful patina of so many items made and used by man. It was collected in Kenya in 2003, is carved from hardwood and measures 30 x 34 x 31cm In many cases the sculptural qualities of utilitarian objects, used daily in villages throughout Africa, place them among works of fine art. In many traditional societies in Africa the creativity and care devoted to the crafting of useful objects equals that given to sculpture of religious or ritual significance. Food bowls, doors, door locks, stools, combs, musical instruments and many other functional objects are worthy of the most critical appreciation. African stools have been created in an astonishing range of forms. Generally, seats have a comfortably curved surface to support the body. Legs, pedestals, and bases are designed for stability. Surfaces may be embellished to enhance the beauty of the stool. Many stools are also designed for portability. Handles are often built into the form, or a part of the stool, such as a leg can serve as a means for carrying.
