Rare Old Eroded Bateba Figure, Lobi People, Burkina Faso

This well used Bateba figure, hand carved from hardwood in traditional Lobi style, shows a lot of termite erosion gained while in situ leaning against its alter in the Lobi territory not far from Bobo Dialasso in Burkina Faso, West Africa.
It was collected in 2000 and has a weathered polished patina which does not reduce the integrity of the beautiful serene figure. It measures
37 x 14 x 10cm. and can be supplied with the stand. (see pictures)

Lobi sculpture is extremely rich, making use of a variety of materials such as wood, clay, ivory and metals. It consists of representations and of objects which are destined for precise social, religious and ritual uses. Among these we note the statuettes, known as Bateba, which fulfill one or several functions depending on whether they represent a human or an animal body. There are also stools and staves for festive occasions or defence.
Bateba are statuettes which, once installed on the altars, become active auxiliaries of the invisible spirits, the Thila. Their role is, on the one hand, to fight against witchcraft, evil spells and sickness and, on the other hand, to bring wealth, fertility, marriage, strength and happiness to whomever places them on his altar. The shape and posture given to a Bateba by a sculptor, according to the revelations transmitted by the seers, express the role played by this Bateba and the sort of protection it brings to its owner. Such features as the size, pose, coiffure and sex of the figure are determined by the diviner. More than one figure may be incorporated into a single sculpture. Frequently figures are paired.
