Hornbill (Kasingele), bird figure, Senufo People, Cote d'Ivoire. This piece is carved from hardwood and was collected near Korhogo in North of Cote d'Ivoire in 1995. It has a weathered patina and is in good condition. It measures 50 x 20 x 14cm and is carved from hardwood. Shipping weight is 3 KG. Statues of the Hornbill were set up in the sacred grove where initiation into adulthood and other poro organisation rites took place. In some instances, the figures were carried on the heads of poro members. This large bird, wingspan may reach 5 feet, is venerated by the Senufo and is frequently depicted in their art. It is prominent in Senufo creation myths as one of the original occupants of the earth. Senufo, usually name it as sejen or, fijen (according to dialect), a term that simply means 'the bird'. The significance of this bird is indicated more clearly by two other names. It is sometimes called kasingele, 'the first ancestor', which may refer either to the mythological founder of the human race or to the ancestral founder of the sacred forest. Alternatively, it is named poropia nong, which means literally 'mother of the Poro child'. The statue is thus a primary symbol of the Poro leader-ship, indicating the authority of its elders. In the language of Poro these elders are collectively known as katyleeo, 'the old woman', since they stand in the position of 'mother' to the junior initiates. The juniors themselves are called poro piibele, 'children of Poro'.
