Beautifully carved comb depicting a fish, Asante or Akan People, Ghana. Finely carved from hardwood this comb was collected near Accra in 2002. It is in perfect condition. See pictures. It measures 19.5 x 7.5 x .6cm. Shipping weight is 0.5KG. Although a good deal of Akan art relates to leadership and religion, there are many utilitarian carvings such as game boards, pulleys and combs, found at all societal levels. On special occasions such as weddings and births women receive combs from male friends and relatives. Although the combs are utilitarian they also serve as mementos and could be displayed in the home or worn as hair ornaments. Incised or relief carving, in a wide variety of figurative and non figurative motifs, typically adorns both sides. Figurative motifs frequently relate to friendship; an example is the stylized heart shape between what are probably profile views of chairs on top of the comb. Sometimes the handle carries a date or the name of an individual.
