Carved Bird Hunters Decoy, Hausa People, Niger & Northern Nigeria

This unusual hunters decoy is beaded and bound with cloth, cord and is hand carved from hardwood in traditional Hausa style with the exception of a shell attached to the back. It was collected in Mali in 2002. It is in good used condition with normal signs of wear and use and measures 23 x 38 x 11cm.
To attract the birds hunters mimic the secretary bird call as they move through the tall grass of the savannah. (see pictures)

The Hausa people live in Niger & northern Nigeria in an area of savannah. Before major communal hunts, known as Bago. the hunters gather wearing a typical head. dress over a black cloth. This headdress is carved in the shape of a bird's head and is usually constructed from a wooden core covered with antelope skin.
