HEPA FILTERS
HEPA is an acronym for "high efficiency particulate air". Basically a HEPA is a type of filter that can trap a large amount of very small particles. HEPA are made from very tiny material made into tight corrugation. This creates a filter consisting of a multitude of very small sieves that can capture extremely small particles. Once trapped, pollutants and particles are not able to flow back into circulation, due to the highly absorbent pores of HEPA.
There are three kinds of HEPA Air Purifiers on the market.
"True HEPA" Filter
True HEPA filter is able to trap at least 99.97 percent of particles of 0.3 microns. True HEPA filter may be more expensive than other HEPA filters. Moreover, True HEPA filter after using for a period must be disposed, can not be washed or cleaned to use again.
“HEPA Type” Filter
A HEPA type filter may be made in similar ways to a true HEPA filter and may even resemble it. HEPA type filters do not have to meet the same standards as true HEPA filters. It often captures only 60 to 90 percent of particles and that percentage can fall even lower for particles of 1 micron and below. A HEPA type filter is less expensive than a true HEPA filter, however, HEPA type filters can not be washed or cleaned to use again, after using for a period it must be disposed of.
Permanent HEPA” Filter
On filtering efficiency, permanent HEPA filter can be looked to true HEPA filter. It is able to trap at least 99.97 percent of particles of 0.3 microns. The most advantage of permanent HEPA filter is that it is cleanable then can be used again.

COMFORT ZONE

Yes you can stay in the room whilst the ozonator is switched on. Regarding the amount of time it should be left on with the ozonator active, depends upon the environmental conditions. If there is excessive dust, smoke , fumes etc, you should leave it on to the point you can't detect the smell of the offending smoke or smell. It all depends on your own personal comfort zone. Some people are more sensitive to ozone than others. I suggest you experiment with the unit and keep a log of the time the ozonator is left on and when it becomes uncomfortable for you, if at all.

What are Ions, and How Do They Clean the Air?

Principle and Features

Principle: An ozone sterilizer is a multi-function device, adopting the same principle as the generation of ozone by lightning in nature, (ie, using air as the raw material to generate ozone). It uses the high frequency corona discharge for the purposes of sterilization and disinfection. Having strong oxidizing properties, active oxygen (ozone) at certain concentrations can change into oxygen, without any residue or secondary pollution, so it is praised as the cleanest oxidant and disinfectant, a true gift of nature. In daily living, we can always feel that the air is especially fresh after a thunderstorm, which is the effect of ozone (active oxygen).

Features: Sterilization and disinfection, removing smoke, gas and odor, mold prevention, preservation, no untouched area in sterilization, absolutely no secondary pollution, people can stay in the room while the equipment functions, environmentally safe, and health protection.

How Ozone works?

An ozone molecule is formed by the combination of an oxygen molecule (O2) with an oxygen atom (O). This O atom is freed by ultraviolet radiation in sunshine, or produced by high voltage lightning. Most ozone exists naturally in forests and on seashores. Ozone is an inflammable and easily water-soluble gas, with no color and is non toxic. In thin concentration, it has a specific grassy smell similar to fresh air near a forest or beach. In high concentration, it has an irritating pungent odor. When Ozone (O3) breaks down into Oxygen (O2), an oxygen atom (O) becomes free. This oxygen atom (O) is chemically active and has a very strong oxidizing, disintegrating and neutralizing ability, three thousand times more powerful in killing bacteria than chlorine

How Negative Ions work?

There are positive and negative charges in the air. Too many positive ions will leave you feeling depressed, lethargic, headachey and more. Discharge of a high-voltage pin electrodes are able to produce voluminous negative ions. These negative ions are able to attach themselves to airborne toxins and remove the pollutant from the air.

Negative ions and particles magnetically attract to one another. When there is a high enough concentration of negative ions in the air, they will attract to floating particles in large numbers. This causes the particle to become too heavy to remain airborne. As a result, the particle will fall out of the air, preventing it from being inhaled into the respiratory tract where it can trigger breathing and health problems.

The ionized particle will then be collected by normal cleaning activities, such as vacuuming or dusting. If the particle happens to be kicked back up into the air again, it will be ionized, and quickly settled out of the air once again.

Negative ions remove bacteria, vitalize our cells, increase the oxygen holding capacity of blood, improve metabolism, improve alertness, remove fatigue, boost resistance to disease, have a substantial healing effect on headache, insomnia, constipation, allergy, asthma and more.

Relief from asthma and other respiratory disease. A study by doctors shows that negative ions generally lead to favorable effects, and many individuals experience relief from asthma and other respiratory diseases.

Proven Negative Ion purifying technology is applied to remove particles from the air effectively, such as bacteria, mold, dust mites, and other allergens. Ionization also removes ultra-fine particles that a filters cannot capture (as low as .01 microns), such as smoke, viruses, and chemical fumes (hydrocarbons such as town gas, methane, fuel emissions).

It is a powerful odor eliminatorThis unit effectively removes and neutralizes lingering odors from your environment.  This air purifier can effectively eliminate the odors caused by cigarettes, cigars, body odor, garbage odors, toilet odor, pet odor, etc. . . .

It is a effective filter sanitizer.  This unit, with its high level of ozone output, is  effective at killing bacteria, micro bugs, molds, mildew and dust mites and  provide you and your family with a more sterile environment.

Facts about Indoor Air Quality

  • According to the American College of Allergies, 50% of all illness is aggravated or caused by polluted indoor air.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) themselves declare that indoor air is anywhere from 2 to 10 times more hazardous than outdoor air.
  • The EPA also warns us that the indoor air quality is the United States' number one environmental health problem.
  • Today's homes and buildings are built air-tight, and contain a long list of pollution sources (see list). As a result, natural air-cleansing agents such as ozone and negative ions are kept out, while contaminants are kept in.
  • A recent study found that the allergen level in super-insulated homes is 200% higher than it is in ordinary homes.
  • According to Scientific America, a baby crawling on the floor inhales the equivalent of 4 cigarettes a day, as a result of the outgassing of carpets, molds, mildews, fungi, dust mites, etc.
  • Most people spend well over 90% of their time indoors. In which case, indoor air is going to impact our health far more than outdoor air.
  • The EPA informs us that 6 out of 10 homes and buildings are "sick", meaning they are hazardous to your health to occupy as a result of airborne pollutants.

Other Interesting Facts Related to Indoor Air Quality

  • Asthma cases have increased by more than 100% since 1976.
  • About 1 in 9 children now have asthma.
  • Death rates due to asthma have tripled, and quintupled in children ages 5 to 9, since 1976.
  • Hospitalization rates and doctor visits are still continuing to increase dramatically.

Common Sources of Indoor Air Pollution in your Home or Building

  • People. About 80% of what you see floating in a ray of sunshine entering your home is dead human skin flakes. And remember, we can only see about 10% of the airborne pollutants. Dead human skin is a staple of the dust mite diet. Negative ions remove dead skin from the air, which also removes a host of dust mites and other bacteria from the air you breathe. Ozone destroys many of the bacteria that reside on these flakes.
  • Dust. About 40 pounds of dust is generated per 1,500 square feet every year. Each speck of dust carries about 40,000 dust mites and other illness-causing bacteria and viruses. Negative ions also remove dust particles from the air, which also removes the contaminants residing on them. Ozone destroys the microorganisms carried by dust.
  • Allergens. Pollens, ragweed, and a variety of other allergens find their way into the home from outdoors.
  • Carpet, Plywood, and other Construction Materials. The "new" smell associated with new carpet, newly painted walls, new home, remodeled room, etc. is actually the outgassing of the chemical solutions used to  treat these products. Wood floors are better for the health than carpet, but carpet is much more affordable. Ozone oxidizes these chemical fumes so they are no longer toxic.
  • Mattresses and Furnishings. Treated with fire retardants and other chemicals, which add to the chemical vapors we breathe inside. Chemicals are oxidized by ozone.
  • Pillows and Blankets. Dust mites comprise over 50% of the weight of the average pillow.
  • HVAC Systems. Air ducts serve as a fertile breeding ground for mold spores.
  • Household Cleaners/Aerosols, Insecticides, Pesticides. We literally poison the air we breathe with chemical fumes and toxins when we use these products.
  • Moist things or humid environments. Mold spores, bacteria, and mildew thrive in dampened towels, wash cloths, and moist or humid areas. Ozone destroys molds and bacteria, while negative ions remove floating mold spores from the air. Children in homes with high mold show persistent, cold-like symptoms - 300% more than average.
  • Pets. Airborne animal and/or pet dander (dried spit from the animal that breaks off the end of their hair and floats in air since they are so small) is a common trigger for allergies and asthma. Plus, the feces from your pet emits added contaminates into the air.
  • Insects and other Bugs. Insects and bugs feces is a powerful allergen. In a recent extensive study by the New England Journal of Medicine, more than half the homes tested had high levels of cockroaches. Children living in these homes were more than three times as likely to be hospitalized for asthma.
  • Smoking. Smoking in the home or vehicle leaves the air being breathed dense with over 3600 cancer-causing toxins. These toxins also cling to the clothing we wear, and release themselves when we enter other homes and buildings.
  • Vehicles. Recent studies show that most people face their worst exposure to polluted air while inside their vehicle. Pollen builds up in your vehicle's a/c system. Plus, exhaust and gasoline fumes easily enter your vehicle.

Studies Proving the Effectiveness of Negative Ions

U.S. Dept. of Agriculture

The U.S.D.A. discovered the following in recent studies conducted in a poultry house, which are notoriously polluted:

  • Reduced salmonella (bacteria) transmission between chicks by 98%.
  • Reduced airborne salmonella (bacteria) by 95%.
  • Reduced airborne dust & particles by 99% in 60 seconds.

(Summary of Study from USDA Website)

Journal of Hygiene
This scientific publication reports that negative ions cause dust particles to agglomerate and settle out of air. For this same reason, ionization can improve the efficiency of filters.

Good Housekeeping Magazine
In March of 1999, Good Housekeeping Magazine had its engineers test an ionizer by using a smoke test, and found that it cleared out the smoke in a tank.

Journal of Hygiene
Scientists showed that ionization reduced bacterial levels in burns and plastic surgery units by over 96% after a two week period, which results in much better and more rapid healing of patients.

Columbia University
Researchers found people with winter and chronic depression show that negative ion generators relieve depression as much as antidepressants. It was also determined that there are relatively no side effects.

European Respiratory Journal
A statistically significant decrease of carbon monoxide values was found with an ionizer activated. This was discovered by researchers at Brompton Hospital in London, and published in European Respiratory Journal.

Journal of Applied Microbiology
The use of negative ions was even found by scientists to reduce the presence of airborne viruses by about 40%. A study featured in the 1987 issue also showed the negative ions are free from any adverse side effects.

St. James University Hospital
Researchers have found that hospital-acquired infections among patients in the Intensive Care Unit were dramatically reduced when ionizers were introduced - and have remained so since. The ionizers were found to successfully remove bacteria from air, reducing the transmission of infection.

Science
A 1976 study featured in this publication provided evidence that negative ions can have a biologically lethal effect on airborne microorganisms.

Journal of Hygiene
A 1979 study found that using negative ionization in the air protected chickens from airborne infection of the deadly Newcastle Disease Virus.

Journal of Food Protection
A 2001 study found that airborne negative ionization was highly effective at destroying airborne and surface salmonella.

University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Romania)
A test on male rats showed that just moderate levels of negative ions increased the resistance of the rats, reducing or eliminating the effect of some chemicals.
