Angled Lobelia

Lobelia alata (syn anceps)

A native of the Australian coastal plains and Tasmania, its habitat extends from north of Brisbane through to Adelaide, commencing again at the middle of the Great Australian Bight through to Shark Bay in Western Australia. There is some confusion as to its botanical name, alata and anceps both being used.

An evergreen, perennial herb with a trailing habit occasionally reaching 0.3 metres high. The leaves are narrow to 6 cm and angled at the base. The small blue to mauve flowers are two lipped; the upper lip comprising two lobes and the lower lip three lobes.

A useful hardy plant for shaded position and it will tolerate dense shade. It is drought and frost tolerant but a much better plant is had with moist soils. It is known to develop roots at the nodes if conditions suit.
