A native of West Indies and tropical America where it likes hot, humid, tropical or subtropical climates. It will not tolerate drought or frost.

An evergreen tree growing to 10 metres with a spread of 3 metres, it has a graceful crown, heart shaped leaves, flesh coloured flowers and hairy, heart shaped capsules with a soft red skin.

This tree has a history of use by ancient Amazonians as a red or orange body dye which may have insect-repellent properties.

Today it is used widely as a food colouring (E160b) in margarine, cheeses, soups and smoked fish, it is also used to dye maggots for fishing.

Culinary uses are seeds cooked in butter used to flavour rice, soups, meat and chocolate.

Medicinal uses of leaves, fruits and seed. A bitter purgative herb that reputedly destroys intestinal worms, lowers fever, improves digestion and has expectorant effects.

National medicinal uses are - internally for mouth cancer (seed pulp, Mexico), worms in children, colic, fever (leaves, West Indies), fevers, especially in children and after childbirth (infusion of leaves, Indo-China), externally on burns to prevent blistering/scarring (ground seeds, Philippines).
