Sensitively carved from teakwood,
this old sculpture of a monk is from Chiang Mai, Thailand. The barefoot monk stands
on a lotus pedestal and holds an alms bowl, robes falling naturally from the
shoulders. His expression is one of modesty and serenity. This sculpture
depicts a monk from the first Sangha 2500 years ago as accurately as it does a
monk in Southeast Asia today. The wood was originally painted, and now has an
attractive, worn patina with the teakwood showing through in some places. There is a small chip missing from one side of the nose, which is quite characteristic of these old carvings. There is also a small crack in the base as shown, but the carving is structuarally sound and in good condition for its age. See below for dimensions and shipping costs.
