Antique Decorated Toleware COMPOTES Tazzas

**  Australian bidders: Please pay using direct bank deposit.  **

A pair of beautiful and unusual antique toleware compotes or tazzas, circa 1900–1920. The feet and stems of these pieces are lavishly embossed and decorated with rustic scenes from Holland, including windmills, dancers in traditional Dutch costume, drinking parties, sailing ships, etc.

The compotes were manufactured by Art-Craft Products Co., Chicago, USA. One of the compotes still has its round sticker with the manufacturer’s details on the bottom. The compotes are lined underneath with brown felt and the metal surface retains traces of lacquer.

Size: Height = 15.5 cm (6 inches); Width = 16 cm (6 1/4 inches).

Age: Circa 1900–1920.

Material: Tin toleware, possibly with pewter. The term “toleware” comes from the French, tôle peinte. Typically, toleware items are made of tinplate dipped into molten tin or pewter (an alloy of tin and copper) and are finished with a coat of varnish or lacquer. Toleware was popular at the turn of the last century when the metal was worked into a variety of domestic and decorative items, such as teapots, trays, urns, and candlesticks.

Condition: Very good; no dents or damage to the metal; minor surface wear commensurate with age and use.
