A beautifully detailed, faithful model of the Funeral mask of Tutankhamen , cast in a spelter alloy and given a bronze coating to very fine effect. Filled with some kind of heavy material- and weighing in at 1.5 kilo. Ancient Egypt had long since captured the imagination of Europe and the New world by the time Tutankhamen’s tomb was unearthed in the 1920s. This latest, most startling find of all reinvigorated the craze, and the decorative Arts, Architecture, the Art Deco Movement itself all felt the irresistible influences of Egyptian design. I suspect this piece may belong to this later period in Europes ‘Nile Style’ of the 1920s. The bust is set upon a wooden base with a pressed metal name plaque as shown TUTANKU” (A known variation of Tutankhamen, probably used here before the general western consensus on the accepted name was established)
No makers marks, but my money would be on English manufacture- as they are not at all consistent with the chiefly wooden and leather goods produced in Egypt as souvenirs at the time. A fine period piece looking to date from the 1920s soon after the remarkable discovery of Tutankhamen’s intact tomb..
