Beautiful old antique Japanese chest, made from wood, it has been hand painted, with a stylized scene of storks, both on the ground, and in flight, against a sublime golden sky background, and framed by a black lacquered border and sides. The sides feature more painted decorative devices, in the form of stylized flora, beautifully contrasted against the highly shiny black surface. The large, and quite ornate brass fittings (front lock, side handles, and back hinges) also work wonderfully with the black surface mounted on, and are in perfect harmony with the gold background of the top. The interior is also painted black, and there is plenty of room to store whatever items that need to be stored. And since this chest is a work of art in its own right, it can be openly displayed, and even used as a coffee table or display table, as it does come with a glass pane, which covers the whole of the top, and thus protects the painting on the lid. This would make a wonderful addition to any house, and would also make a fine gift.
