Antique Oil Lamp
Art Noveau Cast Iron Base
Beautiful example of a Victorian kerosene oil lamp. Clear glass chimney, Eagle, USA brass burner, duck egg blue ceramic (possibly milk glass) font and cast iron base. Clear glass chimney in excellent condition with tiny scratches at bottom edge only. Brass burner is an Eagle made in USA by P& A Manufacturing co. circa 1900. Broad flat wick included, in good working order. The light smokey blue font is in excellent condition, probably ceramic but possibly milk glass (see swirls of darker blue in close up photo), covered in relief pattern of tulips or lotus flowers, excellent condition. Cast iron base also Eagle, with organic Art Noveau pattern. The close up photo of the font is closest to the true colour of the item. Overall height is 47cm (18 & 1/2 inches) and weight approximately 1.5kg. Please see photos for best description. Condition is excellent for 100 year old item, it has been in the family for 50 years or more. I have only lightly cleaned it so that it retains its lovely aged patina.
Excerpt from "The Collectors", ABC, "Oil Lamps":
"Kerosene lamps come in all shapes and sizes and are made from all sorts of materials. Many were produced in Victorian times with styles ranging from basic hand lamps through to magnificent hanging and banquet lamps. The rich colours of glass and ceramic kerosene lamps are often quite lovely and always popular with collectors. Properly constructed lamps, especially those that use a mantle, produce a soft glow that can be quite attractive and a lot of collectors find them especially suitable for dinner parties."
