We inherited this antique roll top desk from my partner's parents. He was told that the desk is an original Cutler desk, but we have been unable to find a maker's mark or sticker, so we are unable to validate this. We recently did a Cutler google search, and if it is not a Cutler, it is in the style and period of a Cutler, and I would assume came from an American maker. We believe the timber is Cedar, but again, we are not furniture dealers, so we again, couldn't guarantee this. The desk certainly does have a dark, rich brown patina, so we are really just going on information passed down.
The desk has many nooks and crannies, and has a variety of drawers for all your stationery needs, it even has a deep drawer suitable for storing manila folders and the like. It has a couple of shelves which slide out for extra writing space, and a couple of tiny drawers for pens. or paper clips. The desk separates into several pieces which makes it easy to transport.
The desk has a lock on the roll top, but is not attached. We have the top part of the lock, but we have not attached it as we don't want to lock it by mistake. We don't have the original key, and couldn't be positive if all the lock is there, or if it is incomplete.
We have also an antique office swivel chair which is shown in the pictures. This chair is listed separately and therefore CHAIR SHOWN IS NOT INCLUDED. This desk is a beautiful piece from yesteryear, but is also a functional piece and can be used to perfection with a lap top. Again, LAPTOP COMPUTER SHOWN IS NOT INCLUDED.
We have had this beautiful desk in storage for a few years and have recently moved house, selling our country home and finding ourselves with an excess of furniture, so even though this desk is very beautiful and holds sentimental value, we feel it is time to sell it to someone who will be able to put it to good use and show it off to its full advantage.
This desk is not a reproduction, it is an original piece and therefore not perfect. It has the normal signs of having been used for many years in a gentle manner. As mentioned, the lock needs fixing, and the desk top in particular shows the worn signs of many a letter being written on it. A few screws are also missing. Please look closely at the photographs for any blemishes which may be of a concern.
The desk measures 125cmH x 77cmD x 127cmW.
Seller claims the right to refuse a sale to ebayer with no feedback history. If you have no feedback rating and you would like to purchase the desk, please contact me before bidding.
Seller has the desk listed for sale elsewhere and claims the right to end the auction if desk is sold elsewhere before the end of the auction.
Local pick up is from Glebe in the inner west of Sydney.
A couple of watchers of this desk suggested that they were pretty sure the desk is made of oak, not cedar. The chair has a similar patina, so possibly the chair is also oak.
Measurements for the desk are approximately 125cmH x 77cmD x 127W.
