Antique Silk Textile from Traditional Dress - Laos

From Southern Laos, this silk textile, or tin sin once adorned the bottom of a traditional tube skirt worn by the women of Laos. It is made of woven, hand spun cotton and embroidered with an intricate traditional silk motif in rich, earthy colours. The motif consists of two Naga, an ancient symbol of fertility and protection. The swastika also appears and is an ancient symbol originating in India and derived from Sansrkit, svasti meaning well-being and indicating good luck. The Thai greeting sawatdee is derived from the same root and carries similar implications. Unfortunately the symbol was reversed as was its meaning under Nazi Germany.

The textile is between 40-50 years old and the effects of age are seen in the slightly faded colour and softness of the silk, which actually add to its appeal. A few threads may be slightly loose and the material quite thin in places. It is a style somewhat different to pieces woven today and is more suggestive of traditional symbolic patterns. There are only a few of these pieces available now in Laos, collectors of antique textiles having provided a substantial demand for them over the years. It has been professionally dry-cleaned.

It would make a charming runner or wall decoration. These old silks can also be framed with dramatic effect as illustrated in the last photo of the series.

The tradition of textile weaving in Laos, a small country in SE Asia has been handed down from one generation to the next, preserving a beautiful and creative expression of their culture. The skill of the women that weave them is remarkable. Minor bumps, colour and textural changes in the silk are a part of the natural charm of completely hand made silk products. We do however carefully handpick every item to ensure the highest possible quality.
